Restoring Smiles, Health, and Dignity Across Bangladesh
Cleft Bangladesh is a nationwide healthcare initiative delivering free, life changing treatment to children and adults born with cleft lip and palate. Launched in November 2018, the program is a collaboration between Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe (Germany), Operation Cleft Australia Foundation, and SNAD Foundation Bangladesh (SNADF). Together, we are closing a critical gap in access to safe, timely, and comprehensive cleft care for families who would otherwise be left behind.
The Challenge: Cleft Lip and Palate in Bangladesh
Cleft lip and palate remain among the most common congenital conditions in Bangladesh. Without timely surgery and follow up care, affected children face severe health risks, including feeding difficulties, malnutrition, speech impairment, social stigma, and lifelong exclusion. For families living in poverty, the cost of surgery, travel, and follow up care makes treatment largely inaccessible.
The result is a preventable condition becoming a permanent barrier to health, education, and dignity.
Our Solution: Free, Comprehensive Cleft Care
Through Cleft Bangladesh, SNAD Foundation Bangladesh leads the local implementation of a fully donor funded, comprehensive treatment model. The program covers the entire cost of care, including surgery, medical services, and patient transportation, ensuring treatment is free for every patient.
SNADF manages administration, financial governance, and government coordination, while experienced cleft surgeons, primarily based in Dhaka, conduct both hospital based surgeries and outreach missions to underserved regions. With more than two decades of specialized cleft treatment experience, these medical teams bring high quality care directly to families who cannot afford to travel.
This efficient partnership model reduces administrative costs and expands national reach, allowing more patients to be treated every year.
Comprehensive Care Pathway
Cleft Bangladesh provides a structured, patient centered care pathway aligned with global clinical best practices. Cleft lip repair is typically performed between 4 to 6 months of age, while cleft palate surgery is carried out around 12 months, supporting healthy development during critical early years.
As children grow, ongoing assessments determine the need for additional interventions such as speech therapy, orthodontic support, or corrective procedures. While some specialized services are still developing in Bangladesh, the program currently delivers essential support including feeding guidance, family counseling, post operative follow up, and referral care.
Planned interdisciplinary cleft centers will further strengthen access to integrated, long term treatment under one coordinated system.
SDGs in Action
Cleft Bangladesh directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being, by ensuring access to safe, affordable, and quality surgical care for vulnerable populations. The program also contributes to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by removing financial and geographic barriers that prevent equitable access to healthcare.
Impact
Through Cleft Bangladesh, thousands of children and families gain more than medical treatment, they regain opportunity, confidence, and inclusion. Early intervention improves nutrition, speech development, school readiness, and long term health outcomes, while reducing stigma and social exclusion. By combining international expertise, donor support, and SNAD Foundation Bangladesh’s deep community reach, Cleft Bangladesh stands as a proven, scalable healthcare intervention delivering measurable impact and lasting change across Bangladesh.
